BREEDING PROJECTS
“If we named it, we made it”
Local Grove is very passionate about cannabis genetics. Genetics are the foundation for growing quality cannabis. Local grove has built an extensive and unique collection of cannabis seeds and cultivars. Their fascination with genetics and the diverse possibilities within cannabis cultivars led them to start “pheno hunting” and finding unique strains. Since the early days of the caregiver market, they’ve focused on discovering and selecting cultivars that stand out for their quality, potency, and uniqueness.
In 2021, after years of working with other breeders’ genetics, Local Grove officially began breeding their own strains. Their breeding efforts are not just about crossing popular genetics — they are about creating something new and unique.
Breeding, selecting, and stabilizing new strains is no easy task. It’s a time-consuming, costly process, which is why many companies prefer to simply rename popular strains rather than put in the hard work of creating something truly original. At Local Grove, we are committed to the craft, and we take pride in the effort it takes to bring a new strain to market. Below, this detailed process shows the time, patience, and expertise that go into every strain Local Grove creates.

Take Cherry Cola, for example:

Local Grove popped seeds of Brain Stew, bred by Clearwater Genetics

After carefully sorting through the seeds, they selected their keeper plant.

reversed the Brain Stew plant and gathered pollen for further breeding.

The pollen was used to pollinate Runtz.

Seeds of the Runtz X Brain Stew cross were popped, and the selection process began again.

After carefully evaluating the plants, Local Grove selected their keeper and named it “Cherry Cola.”

Finally, after years of dedicated work, Local Grove released Cherry Cola flower to the market.

The selection process is the most critical part of our breeding program. It’s where the true magic happens,
We believe that a successful selection is essential for producing high-quality genetics that will perform well in the hands of consumers.
To ensure that we’re choosing the best phenotypes, we run each of our selected plants through at least three full harvests. This allows us to observe the plant’s growth, consistency, and characteristics under various conditions, ensuring that it will hold up over time.
What sets Local Grove apart is our team-based approach to the selection process. Rather than relying on just one grower’s opinion, we gather input from multiple people with different experiences and perspectives. This collaborative process ensures that the final selection is well-rounded and takes into account a variety of factors, such as:
FLAVOR AND AROMA
POTENCY AND EFFECTS
VISUAL APPEAL AND STRUCTURE
RESILIENCE AND CONSISTENCY
This multi-person judging approach ensures that we don’t miss anything, and that we’re selecting the best of the best, not just based on one individual’s preferences but from a broader perspective. The time, effort, and collaboration invested in the selection process are what allow Local Grove to consistently deliver unique, high-quality strains that stand out in the marketplace.
